Several certificated mediators within the Division of Student Affairs volunteer their time to mediate conflicts within the Division. All of our volunteers have completed training that fulfills the Texas statutory education requirements for mediators. Our volunteers may co-mediate cases.
Merna Jacobsen
Merna Jacobsen has worked in the field of alternative dispute resolution since 1986. She completed basic mediation training from CDR Associates in Boulder, Colorado in 1994. She was instrumental in establishing a cohort of mediators at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) where she collaborated with the university Ombudsman and the UNC Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution to design and deliver mediation training to faculty and staff. She has trained experienced mediators in advanced mediation and facilitation skills. She is currently the primary trainer for the Basic Mediation Course offered through the Brazos Valley Dispute Resolution Center in Bryan, Texas. Merna is currently the Coordinator of the Program for Staff and Organizational Development for the Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M University.
Merna mediates two party and multi-party disputes dealing with a range of workplace issues including supervisor/subordinate conflicts, discrimination and harassment cases, and employee to employee conflicts. In addition to work in higher education, Merna mediates for the federal government, businesses, the K-12 school system, and non-profit organizations.
Jeff Stefancic
Jeff Stefancic serves as one of the Coordinators for Student Conduct and Mediation Services within the Office of Student Conflict Resolution Services in the Department of Student Life at Texas A&M University. Jeff is a certified mediator, completing the 40 hour basic certification through the Brazos County Dispute Resolution Center in May 2002. He has done both civil and family mediations through the Center. On campus Jeff specializes in mediating disputes between individual students and student organizations. In addition, Jeff is active in several higher education associations which promote mediation as an alternative to resolve disputes, including the Association for Student Judicial Affairs. In June of 2004 Jeff served as a faculty member for the Donald D. Ghering Campus Judicial Affairs Training Institute where he assisted with the presentation of a 30 hour training program for student affairs professionals.
Bobby Tucker
Bobby Tucker is the Program Coordinator for Student Government in the Department of Student Activities at Texas A&M. He received his bachelors degree from Texas A&M in 1979, his masters from Texas A&M in 2001 and is currently working on his doctorate in the area of leadership studies in the Agricultural Education Department. He also studied at Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Bobby received his mediation training in 2002 from CDR Associates of Boulder, Colorado, a nationally recognized training center.
Bobby has mediated cases involving personal conflict between students as well as staff. He has also mediated organizational conflict within student organizations.
John Wickline
John Wickline has been a part of the Division of Student Affairs since 1999. He holds a masters degree in business administration from Texas A&M and is currently pursuing a PhD. in Higher Education Administration through the College of Education and Human Resource Development. John completed his basic mediator training in 2001 at the Brazos Valley Dispute Resolution Center and has since served as a mediation coach for other mediator training seminars.
John is interested in mediating cases involving supervisor-to-staff and peer-to-peer staff conflicts, faculty/staff-to-student and student-to-student conflicts as well as those dealing with customer service issues, as defined within the student affairs context.
Jacquie Vargas
Jacquie Vargas received her basic mediation training and certification through the A. A. White Dispute Resolution Center at the University of Houston Law Center. In addition to the 40-hour basic mediation training, Jacquie also completed advanced mediation training offered through the Donald D. Gehring Campus Judicial Affairs Training Institute of the Association for Student Judicial Affairs. This advanced training prepared her to mediate in cross-cultural conflict situations, multi-party disputes, and to serve as a co-trainer on a campus or in the community. Jacquie is currently the Assistant Coordinator of Adult, Graduate and Off Campus Student Services in the Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M.
Jacquie is interested in mediating cases involving students with roommate conflicts, relationship issues, landlord/tenant - resident/manager disputes, and internal organizational conflicts. In addition, she is prepared to mediate cross-cultural conflict situations and multiple party mediations involving students, faculty and/or staff.
