What are the goals of the Academy?
The Academy addresses our desire to (1) Enhance the competence, confidence and knowledge base of employee’s from non-student affairs backgrounds to assist individuals from non-traditional backgrounds to make a smooth transition into the student affairs profession, and (2) provide a renewal program for the experienced student affairs staff member. The aim is to define who we are as a profession and how we make meaning of student affairs principles and standards for our students and ourselves. The Academy provides a common understanding of what student affairs practitioners do, how we translate theory into practice, and ultimately, how we enhance student learning.
How are participants selected?
Directors and Vice Presidents (Assistant and Associate Vice President’s included) and Academy graduates nominate professional staff for participation in the program.
What are the important features of the Academy?
Involvement and commitment of leadership. University leaders nominate participants and ensure their department is a quality environment for on-going professional growth.
Focus on personalization and implementation of skills. Participants engage in reflective activities during the Academy. Collegial sharing. The Academy views collegiality and networking as critical for growth.
Emphasis on professional standards. The ethics, principles, and professional standards of the profession drive curriculum and instruction.
Who should attend?
The program is ideally suited to student affairs practitioners in a variety of positions and levels (program coordinators, student development specialists, etc.). Although the Academy is primarily designed for professionals who did not receive professional preparation in student affairs administration, those who did may benefit from particular content areas. Those seeking professional renewal and connection to current issues will also benefit from the program.
What are the requirements for participation?
Participants must be appropriately nominated to participate in the Academy.
